Integrated Wealth Management Experience

Integrated wealth management experiences are our way to help clients have the type of retirement planning assistance that is provided in a “family office.” If you don’t know what this term means or who it applies to, we’re going to cover that in great detail before explaining the concept of integrated wealth management to you.

What is a “Family Office?”

A “family office” caters to what can be considered ultra-high net worth. You have enough assets that you require an entire team to help manage your assets. These offices will help you with:

  • Family businesses
  • Taking care of budgets
  • Paying bills
  • Managing cash flow, credit cards, real estate

Individuals in a family office have assets of $50+ million. Anyone who falls into this category can be their “own client,” meaning that the entire team works for you to manage your wealth. Extensive assistance is offered, including tax and estate planning, to the degree that 99% of people will never require. You’ll also work with attorneys and CPAs.

All these employees work for you, they’re registered with the SEC, and they assist with managing your “family.” If a person has this high of a net worth, they may need to have a chief financial officer (CFO) who will handle hiring or working with certain experts to meet their family’s needs.

Often, with a family office, they have a CPA working with them full-time.

The family office works solely for the family and will handle all their financial and wealth management needs. If a lawyer needs to be hired to work on estate plans, that’s all handled for you behind the scenes.

Integrated Wealth Management Experience

In our office, our average client doesn’t have $100 – $200 million or a billion dollars. We can’t create a family office for these individuals, but we wanted to create a system that offered the same experience as a family office for all our clients.

What we devised is known as our integrated wealth management experience.

What Does an Integrated Wealth Management Experience Look Like?

Instead of working with one individual, we work with many and take on the role similar to a “CFO.” We look at the person’s entire financial picture and beyond to help you secure your retirement. We partner with multiple professionals on a range of services, in addition to in-house wealth management.

For simplicity, we’ll break this down into a few of our in-house and partnered services.

In-House Wealth Management

In-house, we specialize in wealth management. We are financial advisors, and fiduciaries- which means we’re required to put your best interests first. The majority of our clients are people close to or retirement, and we’re big on the retirement-focused financial plan.

In a few words, the retirement-focused financial plan:

  • Analyzes where you are today
  • Outlines retirement goals
  • Identifies changes that need to be made to reach your goals

Reaching your financial goals will often mean investing in some sort of return. We may invest in the market, bonds, annuities, or a wide range of other financial vehicles. We invest for a return that is comfortable for the client and is based on individual risk tolerance.

Next, we offer tax planning. Some of the tax planning is in-house and some of it is done by working with outside experts. We have checks and balances in place to understand:

  • What your taxes look like today
  • What strategies we can implement before the end of the year to lower the tax burden
  • What to do to save you money next year

We can also handle the tax return for you, and we have partnered with CPAs to lead this process. CPAs will also provide a stamp of approval for all the tax planning strategies that we prepare to ensure that everything moves along smoothly.

Our team helps clients understand where their income is coming from and ensures that their retirement-focused financial plan is operating to reach their goals.

Estate Planning

Estate planning is a crucial part of retirement planning that folks really struggle to talk and think about. However, we incorporate this planning into the experience because it provides you with peace of mind that your estate matters are all handled in a legal manner.

Without an up-to-date estate plan, it can be difficult for you to leave assets in your desired way for heirs and beneficiaries. If you’ve had a major life change since you’ve created or looked at your estate plan, it is a good idea to have your estate plan professionally reviewed and updated. 

For our clients, we have a system in place for the state they live in to create a:

  1. Trust
  2. Will
  3. Power of Attorney
  4. Healthcare Power of Attorney
  5. HIPAA form

We believe this aspect of your retirement-focused financial plan is urgent, and strongly encourage our clients to review and update these documents on a regular basis.

Social Security

We work with a Social Security consultant, so our clients have an expert look at avoiding mistakes when filing for Social Security. Some clients have an easy process for Social Security, and we can help them apply for their benefits. However, other clients do not have as easy of a time.

Our consultant is on retainer and will help consider:

  • Complex decisions
  • Divorce
  • Optimizing for certain forms of income
  • Survivorship

She assists us when running the numbers for Social Security to help you make the best decision on when to take your benefits and how to reach your financial goals.

Insurances

Insurance includes many different options, but one of the major ones is health insurance. When you retire, you’re responsible for your own health insurance, which will be Medicare.

Medicare can be overwhelming when it comes to options, plans, and thresholds. We work with our clients and partners to help them find the best Medicare options for their health scenario and budget. We may be able to structure things to avoid IRMAA surcharges on Medicare, too.

Additionally, we help clients during open enrollment to find plans that may be more affordable or a better overall option for them. 

Long-term Care Planning

Speaking of healthcare planning, we also dive into long-term care planning. Hopefully, you’ll never need this level of care, but you just never know what the future will hold for you. We recently had a podcast on long-term care planning.

We’ll analyze your long-term care options and even help you secure the insurance you need to pay for a nursing home or assisted living facility.

Life Insurance

We’ll work through the question of life insurance and how to structure it for you and your family. 

These are just some of the insurance options that we can use to help build our clients retirement-focused financial plan. As we’ve outlined, we do our best to mimic the “family office” so that it works in your best interests.

5 Financial Planning Topics That Need to Be Discussed Annually 

Annual financial planning topics evolve as you age. We believe that once you secure your retirement, or when you’re close to it, you should consider the following: 

5 Annual Financial Planning Topics 

1. Tax Planning 

Why would you be doing your tax planning in September, October, or November? Several of the following strategies need to be employed before December 31, so if you wait until your tax return is being prepared around March or April of the next year, it will be too late.  

We recommend: 

  • Conducting a review of your earned income 
  • Confirming distribution amounts from your IRA or 401(k) 
  • Identifying any interest and capital gains you may have received in taxable accounts 

In the years you have lower income than what you expect in the future, we recommend thinking about Roth conversions. Although you will likely pay more taxes in the year you convert to Roth, the ultimate goal with all tax planning strategies is to minimize lifetime taxation. 

On the flipside, if you are expecting an influx of income in the future, you can plan ahead to minimize your tax liability by considering the following strategies: 

  • Tax loss harvesting, which is selling securities at a loss to offset capital gains from securities sold at a profit in the same year.  
  • Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) or other charitable giving and donor-advised funds 
  • Verifying that you’re withholding a satisfactory amount of taxes on earned income and any retirement account distributions 

Everyone must pay their dues, but if you take strategic steps today, you can lower your tax burden to ensure that you’re not paying a dime more than you owe. 

2. Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) 

IRA contributions are typically tax deductible, meaning the contributor does not pay tax on those amounts. Instead, taxes are owed on distributions. Once the IRA account owner reaches a certain age, the IRS imposes required minimum distributions (RMDs) to ensure the taxes are eventually paid rather than allowing the owner to indefinitely defer their tax liability.  

Your RMD start age depends on the year you were born. The age for these distributions was 70-and-a-half, and then the law changed to 72, and then 73. Some individuals will need to begin RMDs at 75. The IRS can assess a very hefty penalty if you miss your RMD. If you are charitably inclined, a QCD from your IRA will satisfy your RMD. 3. Medicare and Healthcare Planning 

Open enrollment happens in the last quarter of the year, somewhere at the beginning of October. You can move plans at this time without any underwriting. Everyone should look at: 

  • What their plan includes 
  • Options to change plans 
  • Coverage you may need added 

Everyone is different, and most people end up not changing their plans. However, it is still a good idea to review your plan around the last quarter, because if changes need to be made, open enrollment is the opportune time to do so. 

Note: We can put you in contact with some of our partners who specialize in Medicare and healthcare planning. You may even be able to switch to an identical plan at another provider and pay lower premiums, which is always a great way to secure your retirement. 

4. Year-end Investment Review 

If you’ve been looking at your investments throughout the year, you know that your portfolio has gone up and down quite a bit. However, you might overlook a few things and really need to perform a year-end investment review. What is a year-end investment review? 

It’s an annual best practice to consider: 

  • Portfolio risk 
  • Tax loss harvesting 
  • Adjusting your allocations 

You may want to rebalance your portfolio, depending on how one stock performs compared to others. Perhaps one stock is responsible for 60% of your gains. Unfortunately, this is a major risk that needs rebalancing because you risk the stock falling and your portfolio struggling as a result. 

Additionally, you may be at the point in your retirement planning where you’re close to leaving your job and have enough money to live the life you want, but you have too much risk. Bonds, annuities, or other financial vehicles may need to make up more of your retirement strategy at this time. 

Different age groups have differing risk tolerances. 

Your risk tolerance at 50 will be much different than when you’re 60, and so on. Changes can be made based on how the markets performed, how the economy is doing and your feelings going into the coming year. 

5. Estate Planning Update 

Clients often drag their feet when it comes to estate planning because it’s a topic no one wants to think about. However, if you make it a routine, you will be sure that these documents are 100% in order and accurate. 

You want to be sure that: 

  • Every document is up to date 
  • Beneficiaries (and their information) are up to date 

Often, people come into our office, and they haven’t updated their plan in 10 years. Time goes by so fast, and if any major changes aren’t put down on paper, you may leave money or assets to someone who is no longer in your life. 

Beneficiaries may be incorrect or no longer with us, and these documents are final once executed. A simple review is worth your peace of mind that all the hard work and energy that you put into retirement planning will help the individuals that you love when you pass on. 

An annual update is a check and balance that your estate plan is in order. 

If you check all these items off in September or October, you can go into the coming year knowing that you have your retirement plan in order.

No one likes to talk about long term care planning. Your plan will be expensive, and who really wants to think about needing long term care? Unfortunately, as we age, our health will likely decline, and there’s a possibility that we won’t be able to remain as independent as we are right now.

No one likes to talk about long term care planning. Your plan will be expensive, and who really wants to think about needing long term care? Unfortunately, as we age, our health will likely decline, and there’s a possibility that we won’t be able to remain as independent as we are right now.

In our most recent podcast, we brought on Jessica Iverson, a partner with us specializing in long term care planning and the options available to us.

Current World View of Long Term Care Planning and Insurance

Long term care evolves and changes over time. In the past, a lot of people didn’t consider this type of care during their retirement planning. However, people are living longer, and things are changing.

Long term care insurance has evolved. Past policies were standalone and didn’t have life insurance or annuities built into it. Policies today are not standalone products but asset-based and focus on long term care with life insurance or annuities built in.

If you never need long term care, your beneficiaries still receive something from the money that you put into your plan. Previously, if a person didn’t use their standalone plan, their families never received any of the funds back.

The plans of today are certainly more beneficial than in the past.

Appropriate Age and Time to Begin Thinking About Long Term Care Planning

When you work towards trying to secure your retirement, you’re often younger and not thinking about future health issues. However, there isn’t an opportune time to plan for future healthcare needs.

Jessica states:

  • It’s never too early to start planning, whether you purchase an index universal life policy with a long term care rider or chronic illness rider
  • As you get older, you can reposition an asset and look at an asset-based annuity

Jessica prefers an asset-based life insurance policy that has life insurance on the policy with a death benefit to beneficiaries. You can also pay these policies over a longer period of time to make them more affordable and can add an inflation rider on them, too.

An inflation rider guarantees that your long term care benefit will grow annually as inflation rises and costs for care rise along with it.

Understanding the Costs of Care and Why Insurance is Crucial for Most Retirees

Many people underestimate the cost of care as they age. Even looking back 10 years, costs have risen greatly. You have quite a few options and in 2023, these are the general costs that you’ll be faced with:

  • $4,000 – $6,000 per month for an assisted living facility
  • $9,000 – $12,000 per month for private room nursing care
  • $3,000 – $5,000 per month for a home healthcare policy

These figures are ever-increasing.

Home healthcare allows you to stay in your home for as long as possible, and it’s the preferred choice for many if their health allows them.

Do you need insurance?

We help people through this question by asking:

  1. Do you have enough assets to cover these costs, or are you comfortable with self-insuring?
  2. Do you need to transfer some of this risk?

Our retirement-focused financial plan does focus on long term care needs and helps us look through the scenario of today’s care costs to the costs at age 80. We provide a clear picture of what you may be spending for 3 – 5 years of care, how much assets are left and if there will be funds left for your spouse.

How Long Term Care Works and Your Options

Standalone policies are becoming increasingly difficult to secure, but they are available. These policies are hard to be approved for because they’re the most likely to be used by the individual.

Asset-based long term care has quite a few options and is really where the market has turned to in recent years. This works by:

  • Purchasing insurance on top of an asset (let’s say, life insurance)
  • When a claim begins, you would spend down your life insurance first and then receive a pool of long term care benefits, too
  • If you deplete the life insurance, you still have benefits through long term care that will cover your costs

There are also asset-based annuities, which work similarly to the policy built on a life insurance asset. An asset-based annuity option is more flexible and accepts a variety of premiums, such as qualified funds or transferring an asset from one annuity to another.

With this type of policy, the annuity is spent before receiving the additional long term care benefits in your plan.

You also have the option to secure a plan that offers:

  • Life insurance with a long term care or chronic illness rider
  • Income annuity with a doubler

If you have failing health already, it will make it far more challenging to secure a plan.

Difference Between an Asset-based Life Insurance Policy vs Life Insurance Policy with a Rider

The asset-based policy’s main purpose is long term care and allows you to:

  • Adjust the benefit period with up to 6 or 8 years of coverage
  • Add an inflation rider

You will receive a smaller death benefit with the asset-based policy. 

Life insurance policies focus primarily on life insurance and include:

  • Higher death benefit
  • Fewer long term care customizations

If you’re in your 20s and 30s, a life insurance policy will likely make more sense. However, the standalone asset-based policy maximizes your long term care benefits and has a lower life insurance payout.

Qualifying for a Policy

Every policy must go through underwriting, which is a complex process with a lot of moving parts. An insurer can deny your application for a policy, but we do know what these companies are focusing on.

  • Long term care focused products focus on the morbidity of the client. How likely is it that the client will get sick?
  • Life insurance focused policies are looking at your risk of mortality. How likely is it that the client will die from sickness?

Long term care policies look at the client’s Activities of Daily Living and if they can maintain:

  • Mobility
  • Feeding
  • Transferring
  • Dressing
  • Bathing
  • Toileting
  • Continence

With these policies, the carrier will not want to take the risk if you have a cane or walker or if you’re in any type of physical therapy. If you’re still able to maintain the points above and are in relatively good health, you will likely qualify for a long term care plan.

If you do have a few issues, there are some options available to you, such as:

  • Annuity options, which are more favorable and should include an income doubler. These plans only care about you not needing care right now and are easier to be approved for if you’re declined on a long term care plan.
  • Self-funding long term care is also possible.

Some annuities do accept qualified funds and you won’t need to worry about taxes upfront. An asset-based annuity will produce withdrawals over 5 or 10 years, which you will be taxed on for the duration of the annuity.

However, when the long term care benefits kick in, they are tax-free.

We don’t want this episode to scare any of our listeners. Instead, we want to empower you by providing the steps that you need to take to secure your retirement against a potential cyberattack.

Protecting Against Cybersecurity Threats

Cybersecurity threats are a major threat to your retirement planning. Thirty or more years ago, protecting against cybersecurity threats wasn’t an issue. Today, institutes are hacked, data is leaked, and it can put your retirement at risk as a result.

We don’t want this episode to scare any of our listeners. Instead, we want to empower you by providing the steps that you need to take to secure your retirement against a potential cyberattack.

Understanding Our Obligation to Clients as a Financial Advisor

Before we dive deep into how you can protect against cybersecurity threats, we must mention that as a financial advisor, we must do everything in our power to protect our clients and ourselves.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requires that, as financial advisors, we’re always being trained to ensure that we protect our clients against cybersecurity attacks to the best of our ability.

Unfortunately, there are always risks of cyber threats, but we can make it a big challenge for hackers. We know that if you follow the keys steps below, you will not be an easy target for hackers that would love to obtain your information or gain access to your accounts. Using the following list can help you remain safe on the internet.

14 Steps to Protecting Against Cybersecurity Threats

1. Create a Different Password for Each Site That You Use

Passwords are the gateway to your email, social, banking, retirement and other financial accounts. If you have a weak password, it can easily be cracked using a brute force attack. However, and more importantly, you want your password to be:

  • Long and include upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and a special character
  • Different for all sites that you use

Why?

Imagine someone figuring out your Facebook account’s password and then they look through your account settings, find your email address and try logging into your email account. If the passwords are the same, they’ll now have access to your email and can request password reset links and take over many accounts at once.

If you’re like most people and know it’s going to be a real challenge to remember passwords for dozens of websites, you can use what is known as a password manager. A few options are:

  • LastPass
  • 1Password
  • Bitwarden
  • NordPass

On top of having a unique password for all your accounts, we do recommend changing your passwords every 30 days and at the very least, once a year.

If an institute gets compromised, changing your password every quarter, six months, or when a site asks you to will help protect you if a leak does occur. 

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication

If a site offers two-factor authentication, enable it. Why? 

Two-factor authentication takes time to get used to, but it adds an extremely powerful level of protection to your account. We like using text messages for authentication because that means the person would need to hack your phone in person, which is extremely unlikely.

 You’ll need to:

  • Put your password into a site
  • Verify it’s you through a text message, email or application that sends you a code that changes every time

You’ll still need to redo your password every six months. These two simple steps go above and beyond in terms of assurance that you have as low of a risk of having your account compromised as possible.

3. Keep Software and Devices Updated

All your Internet-connected devices should be updated as soon as a patch or update is available. Keeping your PC, mobile phone, tablets, laptops, and other internet connected electronics updated ensures that your device has the latest software, which may add useful features, but more importantly often eliminates bugs and security holes.

4. Beware of Phishing Attacks

Phishing attacks have been around since the creation of email, yet they still accounted for 40% of breaches in 2022. Be aware of phishing emails and social media messages.

The hacker will be “phishing” for information and even include dangerous links that load a virus onto your device. Hackers will make the email look like it’s official and from:

  • Friends or family
  • Financial institutions
  • USPS, FedEx, or other delivery services

Some hackers will even send you a text with one of these links. Do not click on those links. Instead, go to the official website and see if there’s an issue. Amazon emails and texts are one of the most faked and they often say there was a “problem with your delivery,” along with some sort of link for you to click.

Log into your Amazon account to confirm there’s a problem because these links are often malicious.

NOTE: The IRS will never contact you via e-mail or text.

5. Secure Your Home Network

For a moment, consider all the devices that you have logged into your home network. Your Wi-Fi, router, Nest (ecobee), Alexa devices, cameras, and so on connect to your home network. Smart devices can be hacked.

You want to have strong, unique passwords on your router and change to a high-end encryption when available.

6. Be Mindful of Public Wi-Fi

We learned about this issue from a cybersecurity professional that we talked to in the past. You may log into a public Wi-Fi at Starbucks, hotel, or at the airport, but the hacker can create a Wi-Fi that they control that allows them to access your information.

This hack is a little more advanced. Imagine that a hacker sitting in Starbucks creates a Wi-Fi name “Starbucks Guest,” and you log into it. Now, they can filter your traffic and gain access to your accounts.

If the Wi-Fi requires a password, it’s often encrypted and safe. However, if you can log into the Wi-Fi without a password, this is where the real risks exist. 

7. Backup Important Data Regularly

Important files can become corrupt, you may delete them, or someone else may access them. You may also lose a device with important files. You can and should backup your data regularly. There are options to do this offline, but most people use a cloud service or something like:

  • Dropbox
  • Carbonite
  • Box
  • OneDrive
  • Amazon Cloud Drive
  • iCloud 

Regular backups will also help preserve data if you fall victim to ransomware.

8. Educate Yourself

Spend time educating yourself on recent advancements in cybersecurity. A little education can go a long way in helping you protect against new attacks that may circumvent old security measures.

9. Secure Social Media Accounts

More than half of the world’s population is on social media – that’s a lot of people. You want to secure your:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Twitter (X)

Navigate to your account’s settings and adjust your privacy settings. Some people put a lot of information on their social media accounts, and a hacker or thief can use this information to exploit you in some way.

For example, there are stories of people posting vacation pictures on a public social media account, and a thief finds their house number and breaks into their home. You can avoid this by strengthening the privacy settings on your account and posting less identifying information about yourself.

10. Encrypt Sensitive Data

Encryption is a bit of a complex topic for anyone who isn’t tech-savvy, so we recommend a simple approach: avoid sending sensitive data online. If you call us and ask us to send you a statement, we won’t send it directly via email because it’s risky.

Using secure financial portals that are encrypted is an option, but you can install encryption on your devices, too.

In the body of your email, never ever send:

  • Account information
  • Password
  • Identifying information 

11. Secure Mobile Devices

If you’re on your cell phone playing with apps, talking to your grandkids or spouse, there’s a good chance that you have a lot of sensitive data on your device. We recommend adding a layer of security to access your smartphone and mobile devices, such as:

  • Pin number
  • Password 
  • Biometric face recognition
  • Thumbprint

Securing your phone so that you’re the only one who can use it is very important. We also recommend setting up the “Find my Phone” setting on the phone so that you can remotely erase data on the phone and locate it if it has been stolen.

12. Limit Access to Personal Information

If someone asks you to provide personal information, such as your name, address, or date of birth, be very cautious when providing this information. While this information may not be enough to do anything too malicious to your account, anything else may be a security risk.

Hackers will take this information and use it to try to find more, to learn as much as they can about you.

Unless you know the person that you are talking to and can verify it’s them, be very cautious of providing any information. Hackers may even call you with scary news, such as “your grandchild Stephanie has been in a car accident, and we need your credit card information on file.”

Instead, be cautious of these calls, texts, or messages and be 100% positive that you know the person you’re giving your information to on the phone, in email, via text or so on.

13. Use Secure Browsing Practices

Be wary about information that you send online and be sure to use safe browsing practices. For example, you’ll want to:

  1. Visit only trusted websites
  2. Look for the “https” in the website URL
  3. Be wary of pop-up ads
  4. Don’t download anything from unofficial sources

14. Regularly Review Account Activity

A regular review of the activity on your account will help you:

  • Identify if an account is compromised
  • Freeze accounts before serious damage occurs

If you go six months without reviewing your accounts and information, you risk allowing someone to steal your data for this length of time.

A major part of retirement planning is ensuring that you have the healthcare insurance necessary to go to the doctor for checkups, treatment, or injuries. Medicare is one way to secure healthcare in your retirement, but you may be spending more on surcharges in 2023 than you expect due to the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount known as IRMAA.

We’re going to cover the 2023 IRMAA update and what it means for you if you have Medicare Part B and/or D.

2023 IRMAA Update – Will You Have a Surcharge for Medicare Part B and D?

A major part of retirement planning is ensuring that you have the healthcare insurance necessary to go to the doctor for checkups, treatment, or injuries. Medicare is one way to secure healthcare in your retirement, but you may be spending more on surcharges in 2023 than you expect due to the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount known as IRMAA.

We’re going to cover the 2023 IRMAA update and what it means for you if you have Medicare Part B and/or D.

At its core, IRMAA is a surcharge that you’ll pay for your Medicare if you make over a certain amount of money each year. Updates to IRMAA will affect you because in most cases it means you’ll need to pay more for your Medicare.

Will You Avoid IRMAA Surcharges?

We’ve had quite a few clients who didn’t know about these surcharges and were surprised when they had to pay more for their Medicare. The baseline is based on the modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) of an individual or couple.

Based on the figures below, you will not have a surcharge if you meet the following income requirements:

  • Single person: $97,000/annually or less
  • Married filing jointly: $194,000/annually or less

If your modified adjusted gross income falls under these amounts, your monthly premiums will be $164.90.

Anyone who is still working will need to plan accordingly, because IRMAA is based on what you were earning two years ago. For example, if you are a single person and made $100,000 in modified adjusted gross income in 2021, you would be over the threshold in 2023, based on these earnings.

What to Do If You Made More Than $97,000/$194,000 in 2021?

If you exceed these figures when single or married and filing jointly, the IRS will recognize some nuances or life-changing events that can help offset the surcharge. If you or your spouse experienced the following, you would be considered for a life-changing event:

  • Retirement
  • Marriage
  • Divorce
  • Widowing
  • Layoff
  • Loss of pension
  • Loss of income-producing property

Retirement is one of the life-changing events that the Social Security Administration (SSA) will allow. If you can receive this exception, you will avoid the surcharge. We recommend looking into the life-changing events listed and understanding if you can avoid paying surcharges.

However, the rules are very specific, and the event must fall under one of the exceptions above.

With this in mind, if you believe that you have had a life-changing event and can show your income is under what it was two years ago, you can file form SSA-44. The form is relatively simple and allows you to explain:

  • Why your income is less
  • What the significant change is and why it happened

Again, if you have one of the exceptions above, we highly recommend filling out the form because it will allow you to avoid or reduce surcharges.

What to Expect if Your Modified Adjusted Gross Income Exceeds the Baseline

If you do not have exceptions and will need to pay additional surcharges on your Medicare premiums, you can expect the following monthly surcharges in 2023:

Note: Remember, all these surcharges are in addition to the standard monthly premium of $164.90.

If you’re still working or you have events coming up that will add to your income, it’s important to plan the transactions with IRMAA in mind. For example, if you plan on selling an asset that would put you above these thresholds, it may be worthwhile to sell three years before qualifying for Medicare to avoid these additional charges.

Form SSA-44 and the exceptions it provides is almost a one-time deal with some exceptions.

We have had some folks try to apply and a nice representative at the SSA helps them out. However, the form and its exceptions do not help you if you had a one-time investment gain or were trying to follow a specific strategy for your retirement plan.

Tax strategy meetings are an important part of retirement planning because your income determines whether you will pay Medicare surcharges. We have clients who want to do Roth conversions for a variety of reasons, but Roth conversions will add to your MAGI. An increase in income means it’s important to consider both the additional tax you may owe on the Roth conversion and whether the conversion will infringe on the IRMAA thresholds, requiring you to pay a surcharge you might not have had otherwise.

To avoid these surcharges when converting to Roth, convert your accounts before you qualify for Medicare, or put specific strategies in place such as planning carefully around the thresholds.

You’re not stuck with high surcharges forever. Your premiums are recalculated from your tax return each year, so you may have to pay surcharges in 2023, but if your income in 2022 falls, the surcharges for 2024 will be based on the lower 2022 amount.

Andrew Opdyke, an economist for First Trust, was back on our most recent podcast. For those who don’t know, Andrew comes on our show about once a quarter to update us and our community on recent economic events.

This time, he provides us with a great mid-year economic update that will help you when retirement planning.

We’re going to:

  1. Summarize the first two quarters of the year
  2. Summarize what Andrew expects over the final two quarters of the year

What Happened in the Last Quarter and What are Andrew’s Thoughts?

We’re a little more than halfway through the year, and the first half of the year was more comfortable than the last quarter of 2022. Even the markets have been far less volatile, which is a good thing for investors. 

At the end of the first quarter of the year, we saw the Silicon Valley Bank collapse and a few domino pieces fell along the way.

Today, the Fed agrees that they have more work to do. We’re at the halfway mark of the year, and we’re seeing:

  • Inflation trend lower at 3% year-over-year, although Andrew believes this to be a little misleading
  • Energy prices are slowing down a bit
  • Taking out food and energy, we’re seeing inflation fall from 5.9% to 5%, which is hitting consumers quite a bit

Inflation has remained stubbornly sticky, and the Fed is expected to raise rates at the end of July and maybe another before the end of 2023. The question remains:

  • Will we see a recession?
  • Will employers begin laying people off?

We’re seeing manufacturing come down a bit, but construction activity is at record-high levels. Employment, at the time of this article, is still progressing and remains strong. Consumers are still spending.

Has everything transpired as expected?

For the most part, the economy is doing well and even the markets are stabilizing. There was sort of a concentrated performance in the tech industry at the beginning of the year.

Andrew believes that the market may get a little bumpier going into the end of the year.

Rates Hikes or Cuts: What Will We See?

Rate hikes and cuts are always top news stories and something we hear a lot about from our clients. Andrew believes that at the end of July, the Fed is likely to raise rates again. He expects an additional rate hike before the end of the year.

At the mid-point of August, he expects that the CPI will dictate the future choices from the Fed.

CPI was from activity almost a year ago. We’ll see some bumps in the newest CPI due to the Ukraine/Russian war.

The Fed has changed pace often this year because the ability to guide and navigate this ever-changing environment is evolving. What the Fed doesn’t want to do is repeat the mistakes made in the 70s and stop inflationary measures too fast.

Andrew anticipates the rates will have one or two hikes before the end of 2023 and sometime in 2024, rate hikes may follow. As inflation begins to trickle in the right direction, the Fed will begin to lower rates.

Most countries are seeing similar trends as the United States, but we are seeing:

  • Germany has rising inflation
  • United Kingdom’s inflation remains flat

Energy price rises in the US can put some pressure on the UK economy. At this time, we’re not seeing a Central Bank that we can say, “Hey, they’re doing everything right.” Every Central Bank is working through these ups and downs.

Recession Risk at the Mid-point of 2023

Recession is something we’ve been talking about for a while now, and with everyone spending like normal, it’s almost a self-fulfilling prophecy at this point. Andrew estimates that there is an 80% chance that we’ll see a recession.

When will this recession happen?

No one knows. We may see a recession in 2023 or 2024. We’re seeing facilities being built today without orders in the pipeline in the coming year. What does this mean? Businesses are sort of holding back a recession, but something needs to happen before orders run out for the momentum to remain.

Reading through banking reports, it looks like consumer savings may fall back to pre-COVID levels by the end of 2023. Less money in the bank may lead to consumers spending less, which also raises the risk of a recession.

If we hit a point where consumer spending falls and rates are high, it will likely push us into a recession.

Can we avoid a recession? Possibly. However, it’s a very delicate time. We’re even seeing the markets perform very well this year.

2023 Mid-year Economic Update: Stock Markets

No one would have guessed that going into 2023, the market would be where it is today. Technology and AI helped lift the market at the start of the year, but Andrew is seeing the market broaden a bit.

We’re seeing 3% – 4% of market growth happening from outside of the tech sector.

Most people started the year with expectations that the market would go down, but it hasn’t really happened. Instead, we’re seeing people paying not based on earnings but higher multiples from these companies. We’re seeing the top 10 tech companies trading at 30 times their earnings. The top 11 – 50 companies are trading at 16 – 18 times their earnings.

A sustainable bull market will require some of these non-tech companies to have strong earnings and returns.

Based on GDP and employee output, we’re not seeing the rise in productivity that tech companies expected with AI. Many of these technologies take time to evolve and be adopted by users, which could cause some of these tech stocks to come back down.

Foreign Economies

China reports not seeing the bounce back that they expected of 5% growth, which is low for the country. Apple and Tesla moving to India is changing the economic landscape. With the country likely to have the world’s largest population soon, it’s very likely that India will begin to grow rapidly.

Top-down leadership works well in short bursts, but communist countries have been, traditionally, difficult to maintain long-term.

For example, the tech sector has been the backbone of the US for the past 20 years, but China has had a lot of difficulties in this arena. China is known to replicate ideas and innovations, which means they continued to fall behind on tech that others had already released.

Finally, when companies in China started to innovate, the communist government started to put the clamps on them because it didn’t look good for the government when these companies were acting independently.

We saw this with tech investments and Alibaba. Investors have been scared away from China due to this clamping down.

We’re also unsure of where China’s economy stands because the country has been known to provide inaccurate information. Andrew expects that over the next 10 – 30 years, China will struggle to grow.

Geopolitically, the world may look very different in the next 5 – 10 years.

Forward-looking Questions: Concerns for the Second Half of 2023

As we move into the end of the year, there are some major concerns, especially with a lot of the big company’s price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios. If confidence wanes, we can see some pullback while P/E goes back to normal levels.

Commercial and office real estate loans are coming up.

We are seeing a lot of foreclosure talks that can hit local and regional banks. Large banks are less susceptible to these potential risks of foreclosure.

Russia and Ukraine will remain a major question mark. China’s threat to Taiwan will remain critical to the market, especially if things intensify, such as an increase in training in the area.

Andrew believes the biggest headwinds are:

  • P/E for many companies is too high
  • Money is coming out of the system

In 2020/2021, we saw the government inject a lot of money into the system. PPP loans, COVID checks, treasuries trying to hold money – all of this can have an impact on the economy and cause growth to slow heading into December.

Forward-looking Questions: Positives for the Second Half of 2023

Manufacturing investment will help the country, especially bringing back semiconductor manufacturing. Investments like this will roll out for years to come and will boost the economy.

We’re seeing a lot of things today that can help us see a boom in the future. 

Andrew is optimistic that we’re a lot closer today to a recovery than just a few months ago. It’s very unlikely that we’ll need massive rate hikes of 500 – 550 basis points again. We just need to get over the last hurdle, and then we can see growth.

Improvements in education, clean water, manufacturing and so on will drive us forward 18 months from now.

Once we get through the tough stuff, we’ll have a very bright future.

S&P 500 Forecast

Andrew thinks that we’re likely to see a pullback in the market because the markets got ahead of themselves. Evaluations and P/E are too high, but this can change with some major unforeseen growth factors, such as AI reaching its expected potential much faster than expected.

People will need to reevaluate to see if they’re overpaying for something that is underperforming with the tech stocks that are trading well after what they should be, in many cases.

Jon’s latest book, Non-food Franchising, came to fruition in a way that many of us can relate to in life. Like many of us, he spent years in the corporate world and had a great run. However, he had the itch to build his own empire and started with the opportunity to enter a leadership role and support franchisees with ShelfGenie.

He saw many people entering franchises that weren’t food-related and finding ways to thrive.

Fast-forward and Jon has invested in a lot of franchises and recently became the owner of another franchise. Through the help of good managers, he’s able to run his businesses that do not include fast food.

Note: Jon is not against fast food, but he believes that there are easier industries to enter and make money from than fast food.

Thought Process on Franchising vs Starting a Business

Starting a new business takes time and patience. No one knows your brand or what you offer. When you start a franchise, you’re starting with a reputation and potential client base that can help you thrive.

You can:

  • Execute a proven playbook
  • Work with a franchisor who will coach you 
  • Network with other franchisees
  • Access suppliers and service providers that are otherwise difficult to gain access to

It’s possible to be part-time, full-time, or even an absentee owner when you own a franchise.

Examples of Non-food Franchising and Who Is Buying Them

Franchising demand is skyrocketing, and Jon has benefitted from it. In the first half of this year, he’s been able to double his business. The overwhelming interest exists because:

  • People want to make a change and have a hand in things
  • Money has been sitting and people want to make it grow

However, the businesses that are doing well in the franchise space aren’t exotic by any means. Instead, Jon is seeing major interest and success with:

  • Gutter businesses
  • Oil change companies
  • Laundromats
  • Health and wellness
  • Home services

Franchises that are resilient are a great option. People will continue to invest in their homes, pets, health, and things like oil changes even in a recession.

Things like in-home care, testosterone treatments, and non-trendy businesses are some of the best franchises to enter, according to Jon.

We described our audience to him and how we go about retirement planning.

When we asked him who buys franchises, he stated:

  • 33% of clients are existing business owners
  • 66% of clients are not business owners 

People have so many transferable skill sets that allow them to buy and run a franchise with great success. Around two-thirds of franchisees that Jon works with are hands-off owners and simply collect money, thanks to the strong managers that are in place.

You can still operate the franchise if you like, but you can also be the money behind it and take a more hands-off approach to the whole thing.

100% Hands-off

Most franchises fall into a semi-hands-off approach. You’ll need to hire the right people, but they’ll do the rest for you. There are a few franchises that are 100% hands off and the franchisor will even hire the managers for you.

About four or five companies will run the business for you.

What do you do?

  • Jump on call once or twice a month
  • Make decisions

If you’re interested in owning a franchise in retirement, there are options available that allow you to invest and have the franchisor do most of the heavy lifting.

Financials Around Franchising

Franchising does cost money, so we asked Jon to explain:

  • Funding. You can use a special program called ROBS to roll money from your 401(k) or IRA into the business without a tax penalty. You can also pay yourself straight from the business. 
  • Expenses. Most franchises fall between $150,000 – $350,000 in costs. Many clients put $50,000 – $75,000 into the business and then take out an SBA loan for the remainder.
  • Returns. Of course, the return will vary. The franchisor will provide you with documents on the general returns that you can expect. Jon did six gutter businesses last year, costing $200,000-$220,000. These businesses often hit $1 million in revenue in the first year with margins from 15% to 27%.

Almost 90% to 95% of clients start a fresh franchise, but you can find some gems that are for sale. Buying resale does have some inherent risks to consider, too.

Franchises allow you to build toward an exit. You can sell the franchise in the future with a large payoff. One study found that franchises sold for 1.5 times a traditional business, so you can benefit from the income coming in and then sell the asset for a major payoff at the end.

Jon mentions that there are a lot of passive opportunities and other options that allow you to grow and own many franchises – if that is something that you want to consider.

Annuities or CDs – What You Should Consider

Annuities or CDs?” is a question many folks are asking because interest rates on CDs are the best they’ve been in a long time. In this article, we’ll cover both annuities and CDs to help you better understand which option is right for your current retirement planning strategy.

Wait. CDs? They’re No Good, Right?

We haven’t talked about CDs for a long time. Interest rates weren’t that attractive in past years. Most people were lucky to receive 1% to 2% returns. Clients who want to reduce market risk can, at the time of posting this article, go out and get a 1-year CD at 5.5%, or a 5-year CD at 4.5%.

With returns like this, we have a lot of people questioning why they would put their money into an annuity – especially a fixed annuity.

First, we need to consider putting the funds into the right place for your retirement focused plan. You have a lot of options when investing, including the following three main categories:

1. Growth

You can put your money into growth assets, such as equities, because they have the highest return potential. These assets would include things like ETFs, stocks, and mutual funds.

These funds need to remain in the market for some time and have the risk of volatility. Markets go up and down all the time, and your funds will follow this trend, too. You do have the potential to lose money with equities, but we do have controls in place to limit these potential losses.

2. Safety

If you want to have a good rate of return without the risk of losing money on it, you’re now in the following territory:

  • CDs
  • Treasury Bonds
  • Fixed Annuities

These investment vehicles protect you from market losses, so you don’t need to worry about that, but you may earn less with a fixed option.

3. Cash

Easy money access. If you need liquidity, this is the avenue that you’ll want to choose because it gives you access to the money without penalties when you need it. However, you will not receive a high rate of return.

 Keeping this in mind, we’re going to expand on the second category, “safety”, because that’s where the discussion of CDs vs. annuities really exists.

Interest Rate Risks of CDs and Annuities

CDs and annuities are the “hot topic” right now. Interest rates have gone up due to inflationary measures and banks are now able to offer better rates on CDs than they have in a long time. The Fed’s goal is to tame inflation, and when it does go down, interest rates will also come down.

If you buy a CD today at 5% and allow it to reach maturity, you can choose to:

  • Take the money and put it back in a CD
  • Take the money out and put it into other investments

CD renewals will allow you to buy the CD again at current market rates. It’s very likely that rates will come down and you may have a CD rate of 3.5% or 4% at renewal – or lower. Two years from now, CDs may be 2% or 1.5%.

These lower interest rates are your “reinvestment risk”.

We like the idea of putting a portion of our client’s money into the six-month or one-year CDs, if they know they’ll use these funds in the next year and will need to access them. In the meantime, they will receive a nice return on their investment.

Fixed Indexed Annuities and Their Potential 

Fixed Indexed Annuities (FIAs) are driven by interest rates, so just like CDs, the interest rates have gone up in the last year. The key difference between a CD and an FIA is the length of the contract you receive. For an annuity, the term is longer, such as 10 years.

You may receive a 4.5% – 5.5% interest rate on CDs for 1 year or more. Over the past 10 years, FIAs with no riders or fees have had returns of 4% – 6%. Compared to CDs, this range for annuities was much higher.

In today’s market, because of higher interest rates you can receive an FIA that averages 5% to 10% over a 10-year period. However, you may have some years with 0% returns.

How does that work?

Annuities are linked to an index. For example, S&P 500:

  • S&P 500 rises 10%, so you earn 10%
  • Next year, the S&P 500 drops over 10%. Since you are protected from market losses in an FIA, you do not lose any money in that year.

Fortunately, FIAs often have many index options that allow you to diversify your potential and gain more opportunity.

We believe FIAs are really a bond alternative, as they are both conservative and protect against risk. Bonds in 2020 – 2022 hurt portfolios more than they helped.

Clients often look to bonds to make 3% – 5%, but FIAs offer:

  • Greater return opportunities
  • Principal Protection (protection from market losses)

Of course, if you have money that you want to park for a year and then use the money, put it into a CD and make your 5% return. However, for long-term investments and the potential to make more money, it often makes better sense to go with an annuity.

Annuities are longer-term, but the reward is more consistent. CDs are shorter-term and, while they have their place today, will see rates go back down as inflation falls and interest rates follow.
